Straddling the Voortrekker Road (running left to right), Bellville became a city in its own right, before being absorbed into the Uni-City of Cape Town in 2000. Stretching to the north are the affluent suburbs of Tyger Valley and Durbanville straddling the hills of the same name. This was, and still is, the route to the interior, but it is also a major business centre, with the Tygerburg Hospital and University of the Western Cape, with much industry to the south and the edges of the Cape Flats townships.
